Ms Pritchett - Classroom Teacher

What an incredible start to the school year for 1A! I am so excited to be teaching our awesome students this year. They all look so smart in school uniform and have settled in quickly to the routines at school and our very new classroom. They are feeling safe and happy at school and are building strong friendships.

We’ve had many exciting learning experiences in our classroom this Term. We started with a huge focus on getting to know each other and our school values. I am so proud of our students who are doing their best to show excellence, commitment, teamwork, and respect.

I’m so impressed with how our students have been using the reading strategies they are learning, and the reading routine they are developing at home. They love writing stories and recounts, and they are so proud of their remarkable efforts. Our students have amazed me with their Mathematics abilities in Number, Place Value and Location.

They also love singing our songs and listening to stories.

Twilight Sports was one of our College highlights this term. It was good to meet the families of our students. Our students enjoyed the fun activities and of course we all enjoyed the sausage sizzle.

Thank you, parents and carers, for your continual support in our learning programs and activities. We’re really looking forward to many exciting activities and learning next term.

Enjoy the term break and Easter, if you are celebrating!

Mrs Abraham - Classroom Teacher

It has been a smooth start to the year in 2/3M!

We have welcomed some amazing new students who have made new friends and enjoyed getting to know our classroom routines.

We have set up a positive reward system to work towards where students can accumulate popsicle sticks and gain a reward. We also have a class reward that we all work towards and are well on our way to achieving a whole class reward.

We spent the first few weeks of the year learning about each other, building relationships and supporting each other through the start of a new year!

In Literacy, we have been focusing on recounts about the weekend, choosing characters and a setting to write a narrative and writing a procedure. Students have particularly enjoyed writing a recipe procedure to make Fairy Bread. It is all very exciting!

Reading activities have focussed on making connections to a text and ourselves. We have also been learning to predict what will happen before we read, during the reading and what will happen at the end of the story. Everyone has been focussing on learning new vocabulary and improving spelling skills. We have chosen ‘Just Right’ books and discussed the importance of fluent reading.

In Numeracy, we have been learning how to problem solve, looking for the important parts of the problem. We have also been working towards understanding the value of each digit in a number and the importance of place value when we are adding two numbers. We have been playing many games to consolidate our learning and a times table challenge is under way.

I am very proud of all the Grade 3 students who have shown resilience and confidence when completing all the NAPLAN activities. We are looking forward to seeing the students' results when they are available.

Integrated Studies has focussed on our overall health, safety and active lifestyle. We discussed healthy foods and how eating well, affects our moods. We planted vegetables and hope to make some healthy food with the food. We hope the garden will bring our school community together.

Students have been very diligent during Mandarin lessons, learning how to introduce themselves to others and understand some interesting vocabulary. They are teaching me some new words.

Busy, Busy, Busy! Loads of fun, learning and excitement to come!

Mrs McPhie - Classroom Teacher

This term, in Writing, 3/4R have created some incredible narrative stories and crafted a brilliant procedural text. Reading has been just as fun, as we’ve focused on improving our fluency, doing close readings, predicting, and making exciting connections to what we have read. In Mathematics, they have been mastering place value and gaining a strong understanding of location – they are doing amazing work!

On top of all the hard work they’ve been putting in, 3/4R have been loving their specialist subjects like Art, Sport, PE, STEM, Mandarin, and Library – they’ve been thriving in every area!

Together, 3/4R have created a truly incredible learning environment, where everyone is supportive and focused on growing together. I am so proud of all that they have accomplished, and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things we will do in Term 2!

Mrs Rozanic - Classroom Teacher

We have had an impressive Term 1 in Grade 4W! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable holiday break. The students have returned refreshed and ready for a fantastic term filled with engaging learning experiences and special events.

Swimming Carnival
One of the highlights of this term was our much-anticipated Swimming Carnival! The students had the opportunity to showcase their swimming skills, participate in friendly competition, and cheer on their classmates. It was a wonderful day of teamwork, perseverance, school and house spirit!

Building Resilience
This term, we also started our Resilience Project lessons. These sessions have focus on important skills such as gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness, helping students develop emotional resilience and a positive mindset. Through discussions, activities, and reflections, we aim to equip students with strategies to navigate challenges and build confidence in their everyday lives.

Exciting Learning Ahead
In addition to these special events, our classroom learning will continue to challenge and inspire students. We are diving into new topics across all subject areas, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

We look forward to a wonderful Term 2 together!

Mr Wixon - Classroom Teacher

It has been a lovely start to the year in 5/6B. Beginning the year by developing our classroom mission statement was a great way for students to share their ideas about creating their perfect classroom.

Students have been learning about problem solving and whole number concepts in Numeracy. They are working in scaffolding groups across the grade 5/6 grades 4 days a week and have been shining in their dedication and effort.

In Reading, we have focused on solving unknown words and searching for and using information by analysing both fiction and non-fiction books. Students are encouraged to practise these strategies during their home reading practise.

In Writing, students have developed persuasive writing pieces with a strong focus on using persuasive devices effectively. They have also completed their narrative writing unit and are composing creative stories with interesting vocabulary.

Twighlight Sports and our College Swimming Carnival have been really fun events. It was great to see the students getting involved and trying out new things.

We have started our prep/grade 1 buddy program with the 5/6 students. They are thoroughly enjoying having the opportunity to work with the younger students doing fun, engaging activities.

Ms Bishop - Classroom Teacher

Grade 5/6E has had an exciting and eventful start to the year! Students have enthusiastically participated in the swimming carnival, Chang Week, Harmony Week, and many other engaging activities throughout the term. Additionally, our Grade 5 students successfully completed NAPLAN, demonstrating their hard work and dedication.

In Reading, students have been developing their comprehension skills by exploring various strategies to deepen their understanding of texts. They have focused on techniques such as solving unfamiliar words, making inferences, monitoring and correcting their reading, and practising close reading.

In Writing, students have been honing their skills in narrative, persuasive, and procedural texts. They have written a range of creative narratives, enhancing their use of vivid setting descriptions and character dialogue to bring their stories to life.

In Mathematics, students have been strengthening their understanding of place value and problem-solving strategies. They have also explored concepts of location, including how to navigate and plot points on Cartesian planes.

In Integrated Studies, the focus has been on health and well-being. Students have been learning about personal safety, well-being, and the resources available to seek support when needed.

Additionally, we have introduced The Resilience Project, where students have been reflecting on and sharing ways they express gratitude and kindness each day.

It has been a fantastic start to the year in 5/6E, and we look forward to more exciting learning experiences ahead!

Miss Edwards - Classroom Teacher

Congratulations to all 5/6T students on a fantastic start to the 2025 school year! Throughout this term, we have achieved such a lot and learnt many things. We started the year with many fun getting to know you activities, such as cup stacking team challenges, and have done many exciting things since. The highlights have included our Twilight Sports, Swimming Carnival, and getting to know our buddies in Prep C.

During Literacy this term, students have learnt how to write interesting persuasive pieces and descriptive narratives. We have also looked at procedural writing, where we have practised following recipes and writing detailed instructions. In our Reading lessons, students have learnt strategies to solve words that they are unsure of, inferred character thoughts and feelings, and closely read complicated texts.

In Maths, students have delved into place value and location. Students looked at how place value extends into larger numbers, used decimals, and used coordinates to describe location.

I cannot wait to see all of the growth that students in 5/6T will continue to show this year!

Ms Brady - CLassroom Teacher

Welcome to the Primary Language Centre (PLC).
This term we have 11 students from 4 different countries! We started the year looking at the people and places in our school – you should see our photo wall.

Answering questions about our weekend, what we ate for breakfast and how we get to school each day helps us learn how to interact and maintain conversations. We’ve explored the language and value of numbers in Maths, and have researched and presented information about Autumn in both our home language and English.

We learnt all about sequencing a text through oral recounts, sequencing pictures from the story, role plays and watching animated versions of the text. We loved going to the Swimming Carnival and congratulate Lidiya for representing Carwatha at Division.

A highlight of the term was going to Springvale Library, where we read picture story books in English and then explored the different books in our home languages upstairs. Plurilingual experiences further enhance our learning. Each day we spend time in our mainstream classes, getting to know our peers and being able to practise our English. A mixture of intensive language studies and immersion is helping us thrive in 2025!

Mrs Clarke - Classroom Teacher

This term the Primary Art room has been transformed into a ceramics room. Grade 3/4R, 4W, 5/6B, 5/6T and 5/6E have been getting their hands dirty and their creative hats on to form some marvellous artworks.

The clay has been rolled, poked, pinched, scraped, joined and moulded into amazing creations!  Students have been forming pinch pots, coil pots, mugs, huts, bowls and individual creations. Early next term colourful glazes will be added to their works before being fired in the kiln.

Take a look at some of the 3/4R students in action.

Secondary Report Term 1 2025

Carwatha College P-12 would like to present our 2024 secondary Honours students.

We extend a warm welcome to the school year for our Blackburn students and their families, and look forward to supporting our community of learners, as they embark on an exciting learning journey at Carwatha College.

This year promises to be one filled with growth, discovery, and achievement. As students settle into their studies, all teachers are here to support their learning journey. As our students are exploring new subjects, pursuing their passions, or overcoming challenges, they need to remember they have support.

At Carwatha College, we believe in fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, commitment and respect. Together we can embrace the opportunities that lie ahead and strive for personal and vocational success. All Blackburn students had an assembly during the first week of the school year. Students were reminded of the school values, processes protocols and policies.

The most important items to note are as follows:

1. Attendance and Lateness

There is a 90% attendance requirement in all subjects. Parents need to be proactive with notifying the school of their child’s absence whether it is for the day or for a longer period. Parents can note an absence on Compass or contact the school. Medical Certificates must also be provided to Home Group Teachers or Learning House Leaders/Learning House Assistances.

It is important that students are at school on time, however, we understand there are times when this isn’t possible. Students need to remember to sign in at the General Office when late to school and then make their way to their classroom as quickly as possible.

2. School Uniform

Any questions about school uniform can be clarified through email communication or a phone call. Please provide your child with the proper school shoes (all black) and support our uniform policy. There is assistance for families who need it. Also please note the school blazer must be worn to and from school every day.

3. Mobile Phones and Digital Devices

Mobile phones are banned in all Victorian schools. Mobile phones need to be placed in student lockers at the beginning of Period 1 and used outside of school hours. Any misuse will result in confiscation of the item.

4. Lockers and Locks

Students have been allocated a locker, which must be locked with an appropriate lock.

5. Class materials

Students are expected to have all the required materials to effectively engage in learning. These materials include textbooks, workbooks, writing materials (pens, pencils, pencil case), laptop and diary (supplied by the school).

Please remember that all families of Victorian Government schools received the School Saving Bonus of $400 which can go towards the purchase of textbooks, uniforms and camps/excursions. If you have any issues with the purchase of school materials or school uniforms, please make contact and we will do our best to support your child.

Swimming Carnival

On Friday 28th February, our school swimming carnival was held at a new location at the Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre. We are thrilled to announce that Blackburn House emerged victorious! The energy, determination, and school spirit displayed by all competitors made for an unforgettable day.

Beyond the victories in the pool, Blackburn’s team spirit shone brightly. The cheering from the sidelines was electric, reflecting the unity and encouragement that Blackburn House is known for. Their support for one another, good sportsmanship, and enthusiasm were commendable and contributed to the positive and inclusive atmosphere of the event.

A heartfelt thank you to all the students, staff, and families who participated, supported, and contributed to the success of the Swimming Sports. Events like these remind us of the strength of our school community and the importance of celebrating each other's achievements.

Once again, congratulations to Blackburn House on an outstanding win. We look forward to seeing what you achieve next!

Go Blackburn!

As we embrace a fresh start in 2025, we look forward to building close connections with our school community. Best wishes for a fulfilling and rewarding year ahead!

Mrs Herridge, Mrs Rentzis & Mrs Coleman - Learning House Leaders

Already a term into 2025, and it has flown! We have had so many new students join us and get off to a terrific start this year, and Chang has also welcomed a new Secondary Home Group teacher, Alex Palermo to CH2. We’ve already had a lot of fun, and plenty of successes in and out of the classroom.

We are pleased to announce and celebrate our Chang Ambassador Team for 2025. Student leaders play an important role in contributing ideas, being a voice for their peers and being an important role model. Many relish the opportunities to gain new skills and experiences as well. Our Ambassadors for 2025 are:

Senior (Year 10 – 12)

Mele
Anthony
Rochelle
Michael

Junior (Year 7 – 9)

Andrew
Giszelle
Hanuj
Sarah

Primary

Zaedon
Daphne

Our first major house event was the Swimming Carnival, with students competing in different swimming races, relays and novelty events. It was great to see strong team spirit between primaries and secondaries, particularly in the novelty events! We had a lot of fun and many students had a go at an event that suited them. We finished third with a few strong performances in the pool carrying the team!

Chang Week took place this term, with money raised going to the Cancer Council. A range of activities took place during the week with students participating well, and our Chang Leaders did a fantastic job and helping or running different parts of the week!

Finally, we’ve had students demonstrating our school values in different ways, every day. Many students are recognised through positive behaviour points throughout the term when they show one of our school values to a high standard. The following students have received the most house points for Term 1 as compared to their peers:

Primary: Ana, Ratanaksethika, Mikkayla, Zaedon, Arthur

Junior Secondary (7 – 9): Celina, Sarah, Jordan, Szandro, Eli

Senior Secondary (10 – 12): Sofia, Christopher, Jasleen, Isaac, Michael

Well done to all of our students who show success and motivation in different ways. We look forward to that effort and achievement continuing throughout the year!

Mr Roberts, Mr Amante & Ms Pritchett - Learning House Leaders

What an amazing start to the year for our Cowan Learning House students! All of our Cowan students have demonstrated incredible teamwork, pride and peer support in all Home Group activities, College events, and also in their daily school life. It is this culture amongst our students that led to a very good participation rate by Cowan in the College Swimming Carnival and a great start to the Learning House Positive Point competition.

More importantly, it is what has led to the continuing strengthening of respectful relationships between students of different year levels, with many students taking on varied and exciting new leadership opportunities and demonstrating personal triumphs in the areas of academic and sporting excellence.

In 2025, our school community has introduced The Resilience Project. The program provides our entire school community with valuable tools and strategies focused on enhancing mental health, resilience, and emotional wellbeing through practices of gratitude (G), empathy (E), mindfulness (M). Our P-12 Cowan students have been great participants in all activities are beginning to speak more about having GEM in their daily lives.

A focus for the start of the year has been on recognising and celebrating students demonstrating positive learning and social behaviours.  Learning House Positive Points are awarded to students by staff when they model the School Values - Respect, Commitment, Team Work and Excellence – inside and outside of the classroom.

Congratulations to the following Cowan students who have been identified by staff as going above and beyond in this area:

Highest individual Points:

Primary – Thomas (Grade 6)

Junior Secondary – Daphne (Year 8)

Senior Secondary – Nabil (Year 11)

Also, congratulations to our Learning House Ambassadors who have shown exceptional leadership qualities in the organisation and running House Assemblies and leading House pride during the College Swimming Carnival. These students are true role models of our School Values.  We would like to thank them for their work so far and are extremely excited to see their vision for the reminder of the year come to light. Well done:

Cowan Primary Ambassadors – Thomas and Arjen

Cowan Secondary Junior Ambassadors – Rayyan, Kevin, Andrej and Tami

Cowan Secondary Senior Ambassadors – Ivona, Kuachluach, Lironi and Annie

Students in the International Students Program (ISP) have had a wonderful start to the year. Many of our international students returned home over the summer break to visit family and friends.  Students have returned refreshed, renewed and ready to tackle the new academic year.

We are delighted to welcome twelve new students to the program. Seven in our Primary Learning Centre (PLC) and five in our English Learning Centre (ELC).

These students have chosen to continue their education at Carwatha College P-12 and come from diverse backgrounds, including China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Afghanistan. We wish them all the best as they embark on this journey!

Here are some of the first impressions our students have shared so far:

  • Carwatha is my first school after coming to Australia. Life in Carwatha is very new to me. I have made many friends, and the teachers here are very friendly.
  • I haven’t been at Carwatha for a long time, so I don’t have any special experience, but I feel happy every day in ELC.
  • From last term to this term, I have learnt more and maybe improved.
  • My English has improved a lot since I came to the school and Mr. S is really a perfect teacher.

Mrs Leventakis - Internatinal Student Teacher

What a great start to the year we've had in Science!

Our wonderful Year 7 students have been working hard this term learning about lab equipment, safety, and how to work and communicate scientifically. Their dedication has certainly paid off as they can all now proudly display their Bunsen burner certificates. We have even been able to use the Bunsen Burners to conduct our very first experiment!

It's been quite the change from Grade 6, in terms of workload and learning formats, especially with the use of laptops and textbooks in class. Despite the jump, the Year 7s have transitioned well, demonstrating our college values of commitment, teamwork, respect and excellence, the results of which they are starting to see in their work.

We are so looking forward to see what comes next!

We would like to introduce a new Careers staff member at the school – Makayla Lewis. Celine and Makayla will be running the Careers office this year.

The year started off with Year 9 students undertaking their Morrisby Career Aptitude Testing and Profiling. This is a very long quiz and questionnaire, and the students did very well in their testing. Year 9 students will be undergoing face-to-face career counselling early Term 2 to discuss the results from the quiz and get started on their career planning.

We had the opportunity to welcome Access Monash to our school. A group of students from Year 11-12 had applied to join the Access Monash Mentoring Program. This a great program where our students are paired with a mentor Monash University student who stays with them throughout the year. The mentor helps them with all things VCE and university to help them get through a very busy time of their life.

We conducted our in-school launch where Monash students and Carwatha students mingled, completed a series of activities and received some freebies to start off the mentoring process for the year.

A group of Year 10-12 female students had the opportunity to attend STEM Futures: Celebrating Women and Diversity in celebration of International Women’s Day. Carwatha students got to listen to an amazing keynote speaker and her amazing journey, speak to a very successful and established woman working in STEM over lunch and participate in a series of workshops related to space and robotics. It was a fantastic day and our girls have a great future ahead of them as they showed off their aptitude in problem solving and applying their knowledge to practice.

We look forward to a very exciting and jam-packed Term 2 at Carwatha Careers!

Our Library has been an active place.  Students in classes, students in private study, Primary students with their teachers and NAPLAN have all been actively using the Library space.  Lunchtimes can be to study, reading, catchups, colouring in - be it creative, collaborative or independent.

We have Fun Tuesdays with Jenni, Jenny, Julie and sometimes Janet. This lunchtime is always a hit, as is playing a simple game of UNO with friends.

Our collection of library books is growing steadily. We are adding books to our collection regularly – Lower Secondary Fiction, Secondary Graphic Novels, Primary Fiction, Primary Graphic Novels, Picture Story, Younger Picture Books, Primary Non-Fiction – there should be a book for most students. A few examples of the new books are:

Our library acknowledges happenings and events outside of our everyday school life.  So far we have appreciated and learned more about the World Wildlife day, International Women’s Day, International Day of Happiness and World Poetry Day. To complement recognizing these days, the library monitors and I have been making book marks for all students to keep.

International Women’s Day. 8 March

Some students at Carwatha are keen to show case their skills.

Tanner Crowther from 4W wrote a short story in the genre- adventure and fantasy.  Tanner was inspired to write this short story by reading author Rick Riordan.  Author of books – The Lightning Thief, Wrath of the Triple Goddess and by using his imagination.  AI was used for the cover and back of this short story.  Tanner wrote this story in collaboration with Education Support Staff – Alyssa Mulcahy.  Tanner is keen for other students to read his story.

Our resident artist Fiona Davies shared one of her works on our library, where it now hangs.

We have three, new library monitors, Primary students Ana, Aaliyah and Kenudi.
