Principals Report Term 4 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the festive season, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful achievements our school community has celebrated this year and share some exciting news for 2025.

One of the highlights of the year has been our students' outstanding performance in NAPLAN. I am thrilled to report that our results were above the state average in nearly all areas, a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and families. This achievement reflects the robust learning environment we’ve cultivated together. Our VCE results continued to improve and we out-performed 4 out of the 5 secondary schools in our area.

In addition to academic success, the feedback from our all of our surveys has been incredibly positive. Our student, staff, and parent opinion surveys all exceeded state averages, highlighting the strong sense of connection, support, and community within our school. These results affirm our collective commitment to fostering a school environment where everyone feels valued and supported.

Looking ahead, I am pleased to share that our school is fully staffed for 2025. We are delighted to welcome 10 outstanding educators to our team next year. These passionate professionals bring a wealth of experience and energy, ensuring that our students continue to receive the highest quality education and care.

As we conclude this year, I’d like to express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support. Together, we have achieved so much, and I am excited for what lies ahead. Let’s continue to work together to create a nurturing and dynamic learning community for all.

On behalf of all the staff, I wish you and your families a joyous Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. May the holiday season be filled with laughter, love, and cherished moments.

Warm regards,
Pat Mulcahy
Principal

This victory was quickly followed by our triumph in the House Cross Country event, where our runners, fuelled by endurance and perseverance, outpaced their competitors to secure another impressive win. The winning streak continued with a stellar performance in the House Athletics meet. Winning the House Cup two years running is no small feat and speaks volumes about our house’s commitment to striving for greatness and supporting one another.

Embracing House Traditions

Beyond this year’s victories, Blackburn House has thrived in embracing and celebrating our unique traditions. The year saw our home group classes diving into activities and each group contributing to the vibrant and inclusive culture of Blackburn House. The sense of tradition and belonging was evident in every corner, with students and staff alike participating wholeheartedly in our house traditions, from themed days to collaborative projects.

As we approach the end of another school year, the energy and excitement across our Learning House has been overwhelmingly positive. This final term has been a whirlwind of learning, growth, and celebration. Students have worked hard to complete their studies, participated in extra-curricular programs, and embraced opportunities to engage with peers and teachers. The term has been a fitting conclusion to a year filled with resilience, determination, and personal achievement.

For our Cowan Year 12 students, this term has been especially significant as they completed their final assessments and exams. Their dedication to their studies, despite the challenges they have faced, is a testament to their hard work and perseverance. To the graduating Class of 2024: congratulations! We are so proud of everything you have achieved, and we wish you all the best as you eagerly await your final results or secure your next educational pathway or employment. As you step into 2025, we know you will carry the values of excellence and commitment that Carwatha instils into every new endeavour.

For our other Cowan students, this term has been about finishing their current year on a high note and preparing to start the next stage of their learning journey. Students have been encouraged to focus on setting meaningful goals, maintaining a positive mindset, and fostering strong working relationships with their teachers. These skills will help them begin the new year with confidence and set the foundation for another successful year of learning and growth. Well done to all our Cowan students on a great Head Start program.

A highlight of the term was the Cowan Learning House Cup Challenge, which brought Home Groups together to compete in a series of physical, mental, and creative challenges. One of the standout events was the “Famous Artworks” challenge, where students recreated iconic art pieces using craft materials. This event showcased the incredible creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm of our students. After a hard-fought competition, Cowan 2 emerged as the overall winner—congratulations on your well-deserved victory!

We also want to take a moment to thank our student Learning House Ambassadors for their inspiring work in guiding and motivating their peers. Also a big thank you goes to our Home Group teachers – Ms Herridge, Mrs Howell, Ms Meng, Ms Toul and Mr Radcliffe for their dedication.

Finally, we extend our gratitude to the parents/carers and families of our Cowan students for their unwavering support throughout the year. Your encouragement at home plays a crucial role in your child’s success and strengthens our partnership as a college community. As we approach the holiday break, we encourage parents to help their children prepare for the new school year by organizing uniforms, textbooks, and stationery. Together, we can ensure every Cowan student is ready to embrace the opportunities 2025 will bring.

Congratulations to 2 students - Primary student Ava who attended the State Athletics competing in the 200 metres race winning 4th place in her heat and secondary student Michael who competed in the Discus and also took 4th place. Well Done!

Year 8 PE students attended the Belgrave Tree Climb Adventure Park. Students had the opportunity to take calculated risks and spend time out of their comfort zone. Leadership skills and personal development were the main focus of the excursion along with creating a sense of community as a whole year level. It was an amazing opportunity for students who all succeeded in the challenge on the day.

I am an International Student at Carwatha Collage P-12. Sometimes, when I look back at my schooling at the college, I cannot believe that time has passed so fast. It’s already been two years since I came to Australia. Time at Carwatha Collage has always been enjoyable. I spent the first six months in the ELC, and that is where I met my friends. During this period, I learnt so many things and my English really improved. Carwatha runs many fun activities, swimming carnival, cross country, international students camp... I have had so much fun and have developed a tight knit relationship with my friends.

Later, I moved into mainstream classes. At first, I felt so worried and nervous, but I found that the teachers and my classmates were so friendly, which gave me confidence. The tasks in mainstream classes were extremely different from ELC, but I always listen carefully to the teachers and ask for feedback. The teachers are so nice and patient at Carwatha. Every time I ask for help, they always help me and ask about my opinions. They always give me work that suits my ability. In Math, my teachers gave me year 10 and 11 works as I have the ability to do excel in Mathematics. My teachers told me that I need to keep challenging myself, and that is how I get better every day.

Last year, I applied for the High Achievers SEE program at Carwatha, and I successfully became a student in the SEE class. It was really a huge challenge for me at that time as English is my second language. However, I always work to the best of my ability and always try to improve myself. My efforts were not in vain. I received many awards, both for academic and sport.

I also got a chance to learn many instruments at Carwatha. Music has brought me confidence and happiness. During my time at Carwatha, I learnt bass, guitar and drums, and I fell in love with them. Now I am a member of the Junior Band.

The first thing I want to say to Carwatha Collage is THANK YOU. This school has given me some of the best memories of my life and I have gained so many things here. Knowledge, friendship and love. ‘To shine, not be illuminated.’ I say this to myself every day. I don’t know what challenges I will be facing in the future, but I know that I will try my best and overcome them.

Congratulations to all Carwatha students for a successful year in all manners of Careers, Pathways, Jobs, VET and Training.

In Term 3 we had a very busy term with our Year 12 students making those key decisions on University and TAFE courses through VTAC applications.

Year 10 students participated in a series of resume writing and interview skills workshops to prepare for the annual “Mock Job Interviews”. 20 volunteer interviewers from a wide range of industries lent their time to our students to run an interview with them – training up those key skills required to get a job and complete a process most people do not like to do. The Year 10 students did an excellent job and we received amazing feedback from our volunteer interviewers! They have a bright future ahead of them!

Year 9 students had the opportunity to participate in a Monash workshop aptly named Monash Multiverse – where they learnt ideas on how to explore careers, where to get this information and how to navigate the difficult world of choosing the perfect job when you’re still just 15.

Term 4 started off with a Career Design and Values workshop for Year 10 and 11 students. Students got to explore how their values play a role in designing their career and future pathways. Year 7 and 8 students participated in a Curious Careers workshop where they learnt the importance of how being curious is a key skill when planning for future careers and how to

Towards the end of the term, Year 9 students went on an excursion to Chisholm Institute TAFE where they got an extensive campus tour, presentation and scavenger hunt activity. Congratulations to 6 students who won prizes that day!

The term finished up with a number of our Year 10 students who undertook work experience. Our students went to a wide variety of employers including Monash University, Monash Health, Chemist Warehouse, Woolworths, an Electrician, an Aged Care home, a Florist and much more. Congratulations to those students who worked hard to participate in work experience and focus on their future career and pathways!

As we close up the year we wait in anticipation to hear the good news of our Year 12 students and other school leavers as they progress to University, TAFE or employment. Congratulations to all Carwatha students for their hard work and resilience this year in finding work, participating in activities and excursions and working towards their bright futures!

Primary Report Term 4 2024

Congratulations to all of Prep C on completing their first year of schooling! What a year it has been. Term 4 has flown by. We have been working extremely hard, learning lots of new things and going on some exciting excursions.

In Literacy we have learnt all about searching for and using information and practised summarising stories. We have been doing some persuasive writing and practised forming our own opinions. We even made our own advertisements to convince others to buy our candy. We also created some fabulous narrative stories.

In Numeracy we learned about time and have begun to read an analogue clock. We created patterns using objects, shapes and colours. We got to explore fractions and began to make halves and quarters and even eighths by cutting up some sandwiches.

In our Integrated Studies unit, we learned all about design and created houses for the Three Little Pigs to live in. We also got to visit MOPA, The Museum of Play and Art. At MOPA we got to draw on the walls, build cars to race, build structures using giant foam blocks and so much more! It was an absolute blast!

To top it all off, we even got to perform for our families at the school concert!

We can’t wait to see all the fantastic things we will achieve next year! Well, done on a fantastic year Prep C!

Mrs Coleman - Classroom Teacher

It has been a very busy time in the Prep unit. Students have been focussing on improving their reading levels and writing short stories. We have been reading many different texts, nonfiction books to learn new things and fiction stories to enjoy great literature.

We have enjoyed making patterns with shapes, colours and finding them outside in the environment. We have also been enjoying revising addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and using all four operations to problem solve.

The Integrated studies topic of Design and Technology has been a real hit so far. Students have been learning about the various design jobs and how they use ideas to create new products. Everyone was extremely excited to make their house for the THREE LITTLE PIGS using boxes and cardboard. They recognised the importance of design and how everything around us is designed by someone.

The ‘MOPA’ incursion was a highlight of our design topic. All students were engaged in fun activities; we designed cars, used blocks to make a wall, played in the MOPA cityscape and worked together to design various things.

We are also madly working on our dance for STOMP. We are ready for the concert, and we have enjoyed all the lessons with Maddy, to learn all the moves for our concert.  All students are excited to perform in front of friends and family.

WHAT I LOVE AND WILL MISS ABOUT PREP!

Taylin – I love dancing in Stomp lessons.

Muhammed—I love playing and working with my friends.

Ella – I love everything in the prep classroom.

We have had another fantastic Term in 5/6K. Term 4 has been jam packed with tons of learning, laughter and dancing. We worked tirelessly on our STOMP concert dance where we all became ‘Warriors’ from the Hunger Games, learning the dance was tricky but worth it in the end!

This term in Maths; we focussed on the topics of fractions, decimals and time. We learnt how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, divide decimals and convert time into 12 and 24 hour times.

In Literacy, we looked for clues in texts to answer inferential questions and used glossaries and diagrams to search for and use information. We all have grown so much in our reading and will continue our fantastic learning journey!

It has been an extremely fun Term 4 and we have had a blast in 5/6K!

Ms Kavanagh - Classroom Teacher

Ms Brady - Classroom Teacher

We have danced our way through Term 4, spending more time with our mainstream classes as some of us prepare to be in mainstream full time in 2025! For the rest of us, this time has allowed us to increase our confidence when interacting with others in English. We can’t wait to dance with our friends at the concert!

We still love reading books in the library, drawing and doing puzzles. Mrs Clarke and Mrs Pam took us to Springvale library again. We loved finding books in our home language, as well as lots of the English books Mrs Clarke has read to us at school. Julia Donaldson is our new favourite author! Mosty because we love watching the animated stories after reading the books.

In Maths we have learnt about fractions, shapes and division, practicing how to say and correctly use all of the English words for each topic as we demonstrated how clever we are with the numbers. We have continued to learn more about colourful semantics, and we are now using it to help us write detailed and creative sentences. Our reading focus has been ‘compare and contrast’. We have looked for things that are the same and things that are different. We also practiced reading ‘ed’ words correctly and reading to the punctuation to help us read more fluently.

It has been a wonderful year in PLC. We have had 16 students study with us throughout the year. Watching them become more confident as English learners, engage with English speakers and share in their incredible journey is a privilege.
