A Busy and Exciting Term at Carwatha College P-12
As we near the end of the term, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a busy and rewarding few months at Carwatha College P-12. The energy and enthusiasm of our students, teachers, and community have truly made this term special. It’s incredible to think of all we have achieved together.
We kicked off the term with one of the highlights on our school calendar—Multicultural Day. This day is a true celebration of the diversity and unity within our school community. From traditional performances to delicious food, it was a fantastic event that brought students, staff, and families together to celebrate the many cultures that make Carwatha College so special. Multicultural Day not only celebrates our diversity but also highlights the values of inclusivity and respect that we hold dear as a school.
Our Year 7, 8, and 9 students have had the opportunity to embark on their annual camps this term. These camps are an important part of our students' development, providing them with opportunities to build teamwork skills, make new friendships, and gain independence. I am thrilled to report that the feedback from students and staff alike has been overwhelmingly positive. We are eagerly awaiting the upcoming Grade 5 and 6 camp, which promises to be just as enriching for our younger students.
On the sporting front, we held our Whole School Athletics Day, a fun-filled event that saw students from all year levels participate in a range of athletic activities. Whether competing or cheering from the sidelines, the sense of camaraderie and school spirit was palpable. Today, we have students representing Carwatha College at the District Athletics Day, and I know they will do us proud.
In the primary school, our younger students have successfully completed their swimming program. Swimming is such an important life skill, and I am pleased to see the progress our students have made in the pool. These programs are not just about learning to swim but also about building confidence and understanding water safety, which is vital for all students.
Meanwhile, our Year 10 students have been busy preparing for their future careers. They participated in mock interviews, giving them a taste of the professional world and helping them develop important skills such as communication, presentation, and interview techniques. I’m confident these experiences will serve them well as they prepare to enter the workforce or continue their education.
One of the most significant events this term was our school review. This process takes place every four years and involves a thorough evaluation of our school by external visitors. They analyse our performance data, visit classrooms, and run focus groups with parents, staff, and students. The purpose of the review is to ensure we are continuously improving and providing the best possible education for our students. I’m proud to say that the review was a great success, and we look forward to implementing the recommendations that will help us grow further as a school community.
As we approach the final week of term, I would like to remind parents about our upcoming Parent-Teacher Night. This is a valuable opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers, discuss their progress, and gain insights into their achievements and areas for improvement. I encourage all parents to take the time to book an appointment and engage in these important conversations.
In closing, I would like to thank our students, staff, and parents for their dedication and support throughout this busy term. We have achieved so much together, and I look forward to what the next term will bring.

As we wrap up term three, I am thrilled to share all the amazing progress and achievements your children have made this term. It's been a term full of growth, learning, and fun, and I’m so proud of 2G.
This term in reading we focused on synthesising, summarising, analysing, and critiquing texts. Students were able to develop a deeper understanding of their texts and form their own opinions on fiction and non-fiction texts. In writing we explored poetry and persuasive writing; we also gave students the opportunity to have free choice writing.
It was wonderful reading all the wonderful poems and persuasive pieces created by 2G. Mathematics was equally as exciting, we spent this term working on multiplication, division, measurement, financial mathematics and chance. The students were very excited use fake coins and notes to practice purchasing items. We also had lots of fun exploring the capacity of objects using sand to measure how much a container can hold.
In integrated studies we focused on geography and used this as an opportunity to learn about the Olympics and the countries that participate in them. Preps to Grade 2s had a fantastic time during Carwatha’s mini-Olympics ran by the junior school teachers. We created flags, banners and passed around an Olympic touch at our opening ceremony. As you know 2G had two weeks of swimming lessons at Splash.
I was so impressed with how organised 2G was during their swimming lessons, they made it a very fun and easy experience. Prep to Grade 2 also participated in school athletics and book week. It was great to see all of grade 2 in their incredible book week costumes.
Thank you so much to all the parents who helped during this term. I’m sure we will have many more exciting days next term!

It’s been a busy and exciting time in 3W! Our students have been working incredibly hard across various subjects, demonstrating tremendous effort and progress.
In numeracy, we've been focusing on a range of important skills, including measurement, multiplication, division, location, and transformation. The students have shown great perseverance, mastering these concepts through engaging lessons and hands-on activities.
In literacy, the class has been exploring poetry, learning how to express themselves through rhythm and rhyme. They’ve also been working on persuasive writing, developing strong arguments to convince their readers. Additionally, we’ve introduced free-choice writing activities, where students can use their creativity to write about any topic they’re passionate about.
Outside the classroom, our trip to Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary was a fantastic experience! The students loved learning about Australia’s wildlife and had a wonderful time exploring the sanctuary. Our swimming sessions were also a hit, providing not only a chance to develop water safety skills but also plenty of fun and excitement.
We are so proud of the effort 3W has been putting into their learning and can’t wait to see what they achieve next!

They also learnt about native flora and fauna. During the Olympics and Paralympics, students learnt about countries around the world, different types of sports and were inspired by the efforts and achievements of the athletes.
Our excursion to Healesville Sanctuary was a great opportunity for students to consolidate their knowledge of Australian plants and animals and how important it is to care for our native environments.
Gala Day was lots of fun for the grade 5/6 students and, as usual, they displayed outstanding sportsmanship. During our College Athletics Carnival, students had the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of track and field events.
The Swimming and Water Safely Program was yet another sporting event this term and it was fabulous to see students’ improvement over the course of the program. Congratulations to students who made it through to District Athletics and to Millie and Ava who are now moving on to the next level at Divisions.
Our College Multicultural Day was an exciting event and a great opportunity for students to learn about different cultures and traditions from around the world. Students looked fantastic dressed in traditional clothing. Book week was another great opportunity for students to dress up and show off their passion for books and reading.
Ms Bishop - Classroom Teacher
What a fantastic Term 3 we have had! In Reading, we learnt about synthesising, analysing texts through close reading and constructing summaries. In Maths, we focused on multiplication, division and measurement. We have all grown so much (both in our learning and height!!)
In Integrated Studies this term, we focused on the topic of Geography where we all chose an Asian country to study. We created maps, displayed flags and researched important events that occur. We can’t wait for more fun in Term 4!
Well done to all students in 5/6T on their dedication and flexibility during a busy term! We have had lots of fun events happening this term. Our excursion to city, where we visited China Town, the Koorie Heritage Trust, and Birrarung Marr, was a highlight! Students also embraced both the challenges and fun of the swimming program, athletics day, and book week celebrations and will finish off the term on our grade 5/6 camp.
During Literacy this term, students learnt how to write interesting and descriptive poems. We saw everything from cinquain poems about competitive eating, to personal ‘I am’ poems where students had to consider their values and wants. We also completed a persuasive writing unit, where students were able to select a topic to write a very convincing piece of work. In our reading lessons, we have practiced the skills of synthesising and summarising, and began to analyse the author’s choices when writing texts.
In Numeracy, students have shown great dedication to their learning. They have practiced a range of strategies for multiplying and dividing numbers efficiently. They explored the world of location and position, investigating mapping and flips, turns, and slides, and learnt how to accurately measure length, area, volume, capacity and mass.
5/6T have had a wonderful Term 3 – rest up for a busy Term 4 to end the year!
Term 3 saw the Primary Grade 3-6 students switch from Visual Arts, to Performing Arts – Drama with Ms Russel.
Grade Prep – 2 students switched from Performing Arts to Visual Arts with Mrs McAleer.
In Visual Arts the Prep students have been learning Art room procedures including care of a range of materials including paints, oil pastels, crayons, pencils, scissors and glues. They have been learning to develop confidence in their abilities to create art pieces including drawings, paintings and collages.
Students took pride in sharing their works with each other. A focus on cutting, pasting and drawing/painting patterns, lines, colours and shapes has resulted in colourful spring artworks, animal crafts and pictures of themselves and their friends.
Grade 1A students have been studying artworks containing facial expressions and using arts language to describe what they see. Looking closely at how the artists draw eyes, mouths and other body parts to show emotion. They then drew a minion of their own using oil pastels, and were encouraged to show creativity and emotions in their work.
Grade 1/2 O and 2G students have looked at symmetry in artwork and created their own symmetrical self portrait with a symmetrical background. Developing skills in drawing from observation in the correct placement and proportion. Then, blending coloured pencils to try and achieve a close colour match to their eye, skin and hair colour.
These students have also begun a study of Australian animals. Their appearance, texture, colour and form. Students have developed their drawing skills and later this term will begin colouring with water colour pencils. Adding water to turn their colourings into paint.
Primary Language Centre (PLC) students have been studying local Aboriginal artwork, which include the spirit animals Waa (crow) and Bunjil (wedge-tailed eagle). They then drew a piece of artwork containing either Waa or Bunjil and were inspired to include symbolic shapes and lines from Aboriginal art pieces.
Early next term, October 22nd, the date has been set for our Arts and Technology Show. The MPC building at the top of the school will be filled with displays of students Arts and Technology works from Prep all the way up to year 12. The Show runs after school from 3.10 with awards presented at 5.30. Save the date – looking forward to seeing your family there.

The highlight of Term 3 was undoubtedly our triumph in the House Athletics competition. Our athletes delivered stellar performances across a range of events, from sprints to relays and field events, earning us the first-place trophy. This victory was a testament to the skill, determination, and relentless effort of every participant. The sense of achievement and pride resonated throughout the house, reinforcing our reputation as a powerhouse in athletic endeavours.
Cherishing Individual Class Traditions
A unique aspect of Term 3 was the celebration of individual class traditions. Each homegroup embraced its own special customs, creating memorable experiences that contributed to the rich tapestry of Blackburn House’s culture. These traditions ranged from games to competitions allowing students to express their creativity and pride in their homegroup’s unique identity. The enthusiasm and participation in these traditions highlighted the deep connection and commitment students feel towards their respective groups.

As we remain in the lead for the House Cup, the sense of unity and pride within Blackburn House continues to grow.
Ms Farrington-Williams and Mrs Rentzis - House Leaders
This term our major achievement has been Chang Week, where we ran the Chang Games to coincide with the Olympics. Students from all year levels had the opportunity to participate in a range of activities to earn medals for their Learning House. There were a range of activities using different skills and strengths and we saw many students get out and give the events a go! A highlight was our Prep to 12 torch relay with students from every year level working as a team, with Mabo winning that event.
Our fundraising activity were donut ‘rings’, and with donations our profits were almost $700 which students decided should go to the Royal Childrens Hospital. Many of our Ambassadors and Chang students helped out in different ways to plan and run the week and they did a fantastic job.
And of course, the Chang Games could only have one winner – CHANG!
Mr Roberts and Mr Amante - House LeadersYear 7 Camp
On the morning of Monday, August 12th, the year sevens were practically bubbling with excitement! It was finally time for camp! On day one we all did abseiling, a sensory trail, and after a beautifully prepared dinner of pasta, we had a nighttime scavenger hunt, we were all running around like headless chickens (it was hilarious)! The second day got even better! The activities were canoeing, catapult building, laser tag and, the best of all, the giant swing! It was like flying, scary, exhilarating and awesome! The next night activity was a bunch of fun games plus Crazy Hair Night! The teachers looked ridicules in their neon wigs! The final day had initiation, some teamwork puzzles and bottle rocket building, and the dreaded leap of faith! The amount of people sitting out was shocking! Who would have guessed the year sevens were a bunch of scaredy cats!

What a fantastic few weeks we've had here at Mabo Learning House! Our students have been out and about with a flurry of camps, excursions, and homegroup activities, which have truly energized our school community.
Our homegroup activities have been especially thrilling as we approach the final stretch for the Mabo HG Cup. With only two activities remaining, it's anyone's game! The competition is fierce among all five homegroups, promising an exciting finish to the competition.
In sports news, Mabo Learning House recently competed in the athletics carnival. While we fell short of taking home the athletics cup, our students demonstrated incredible effort and sportsmanship. We are proud of the outstanding individual performances that made us proud on the day.
Looking ahead to next term, we are gearing up for some exciting events. We will bid a heartfelt farewell to our Year 12 students as they prepare for their next chapter. Additionally, we have Headstart and Year 7 Orientation Day on the horizon, which will be fantastic opportunities for all our students to engage in new experiences and set the tone for a successful year ahead.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. Here’s to an exciting end to the term and a bright start to the next!
Warm regards,
Mr Hammond and Ms Go - House Leaders
